Family Structure
- Family structure was adopted by some Confucian principles
- Filal piety- respecting of elders
- Family life began with the arranged joining of the husband and wife
- A man could have only one wife, but he could have other women in his household
- Believed that the union of husband and wife was unalterable throughout their lives but divorce was accepted under some circumstances- was in the man's favor
- Very few reasons in which divorce was acceptable:
- Failure to bear children (especially sons), adultery, wife's refusal to serve her in-laws, talkativeness, jealousy
- Mothers were responsible for child care
